Denim Wallet

Denim Wallet!!

Alright this is my first tutorial! Ever since I came to know about the tutorials available on the net about sewing, I have been crazy about them….. Recently I wanted to make a wallet, and there are numerous wallet tutorials on the net… but no matter how much I tried I just couldn’t make that perfect wallet I wanted… so after a lot of hit and trials and wastage of fabrics and time… I combined many tutorials and made this one wallet which is passable… here is the tutorial… hope you all like it!!!

You will need

· Less than half metre of cloth for lining (black cloth)

· Even lesser fabric for the outer part of the wallet. The fabric should be heavy weight, like the one I have used here which is denim fabric. Fabric for curtains, linen, etc could also be used.

· Ribbons for decoration. Go ahead and use whatever you like for this part..!

· Matching threads.

· Interfacing (fusible), peltex (fusible)

· Zipper

Ahem ahem….so we are ready to begin…

Cut your fabrics according to these directions,

Fabric A- 10in × 5in

Fabric B- 10in × 5in

Pocket C- 10in × 8in

Pocket D- 10in × 7in

Side pocket- 5 ½ in × 3 ¼ in

Fabric for Zipper – 5 ½ in × 3 ¼ in

Interfacing for Zipper – 4 ½ in × 3 ½ in

Peltex interfacing for fabric A- 9 in × 4 in

Centrally place the fusible peltex on the wrong side of fabric A and iron it on.

Fold fabric C and D into half and set the crease with an iron. Now lets begin with fabric D, open it and put the right side down and the wrong side facing you. Iron on the fusible interfacing on the right corner, upperside of the fabric, as shown in the pic.

At a distance of 1inch from the side of the fabric draw this with a pencil or a marker.

Carefully with the help of a cutter, cut along the lines highlighted. Keep a cardboard or something harder beneath the cloth so that it doesn’t cut across important things!!

Fold along the lines just cut, like shown

Next, place the zipper centrally in the cavity just made and sew along the corners.

Cut the excess zipper away and turn the fabric back now. On the backside with the help of all pins secure fabric E like shown. Remember to fold 1cm of 5 1/2in length inside before securing with the pins.

Sew from the front side again along the line on which we sewed before so that this fabric sticks firmly to its place. Then remove the pins.

Then fold the pocket in half again and sew right side of the zipper to the fabric as shown. This would ensure that right side of the pocket is sealed away since we don’t need it.

With this we now have a coin pocket nearly ready!! Let us shift our attention to the side pocket now. Take fabric F and fold the length of 5 ½ in twice by I cm each and then put the green ribbon on the folded side and sew

On the folded pocket D, with the help of all pins secure this pocket F as shown. Then with the help of the brown ribbon sew the pocket F on the pocket D. While sewing the brown ribbon, fold the ribbon length wise and put half the ribbon below the pocket and half above it and carefully along the corner sew so that both the sides of the ribbon are sewed together.

On finishing, my pocket looks like this.

Next step, and a very important one, is to find the centre of the pocket. Fold the pocket length wise and make a crease with the help of an iron. Set aside.

Put the ribbon in the same manner on pocket C also.

Now put pocket D on pocket C and sew on the centre crease line that was set earlier.

(hope the thread is visible)

(I turned the flash on to clearly show the thread on the centre line)

Mark 1cm to the right and 1cm to the left of this line (as done above) and cut till these points(shown below). These marks are at a distance of half inch from the base.

Fold this part inside and sew along the rectangle formed. This is so that when in the last step when we sew the entire wallet pieces together this rectangle part is left out. It would form a cavity which helps wallets in folding when they are full.

All the tough work has been done.

Now, place pocket C&D on right side of fabric B and stitch all around so that it stays in its place when we attach the outer fabric. Alternatively you can also secure it with all pins.

notice that the rectangle part we made in the last step should be left out while sewing here.

Okay! Now is the time to decorate your exterior fabric A… make it as you please… I have simply attached three ribbons to give it a simple yet elegant look.

We now place the wrong side of the exterior fabric A on the right side of the interior part we just made and stitch on three sides allowing a seam of ½ in on all three sides.

Turn the right side out from the side left unstiched… for sewing the top side, fold ½ in of both the fabrics inside and make a crease with iron. Topstitch all over the wallet…

You have a wallet!!!

Too much of green!! Ha!

Inside of the wallet, complete with one pocket for money bills, two pockets for credit cards, one coin pocket and one side pocket!! ( I have put a label also!! Yay!!)
